Champions Arsenal began their Premier League title defence with a comfortable 3-0 win over newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium, continuing the dominant form that carried them through preseason.
Arsenal broke the deadlock in the 15th minute when Riccardo Calafiori found Kai Havertz, who slotted home, before Bukayo Saka doubled the lead in the 23rd minute from close range after a Christos Tzolis cross. Martin Odegaard added a third three minutes into the second half with a scuffed effort that beat goalkeeper Carl Rushworth.
The result extends Arsenal’s unanswered goal tally to six across the Community Shield and their league opener, a marked shift from the tighter, tenser finishes that defined the closing stretch of their title winning campaign last season. Manager Mikel Arteta’s side looked notably more fluid with Havertz, Odegaard and Saka starting together for only the second time since December 2024.
Havertz has now scored in four consecutive starts for Arsenal, appearing to have reclaimed the number nine role from last season’s top scorer Viktor Gyokeres, who did not feature off the bench. New signing Tzolis, brought in for a modest forty million euros from Club Brugge, impressed on his debut with the pressing and delivery that set up two of the three goals.
For Coventry, the defeat was a reality check after a bright start, with manager Frank Lampard’s side facing a home clash against fellow promoted club Hull City next as they look to find their footing back in the topflight.
