Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Luanda, Angola, where he will represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, focused on conflict resolution and lasting peace across the continent. Shettima, accompanied by senior defence and security officials, will join African leaders converging on the Angolan capital to discuss practical solutions to regional security challenges and strengthen collective efforts toward preventing and resolving conflicts. Nigeria, which has continued to play a strategic role in peacebuilding across Africa, is expected to contribute to deliberations on strengthening continental mechanisms for conflict prevention and sustaining peace. The Vice President will deliver President Tinubu’s address at the summit, outlining Nigeria’s position on the issues under consideration and reaffirming the country’s commitment to continental peace and stability, before returning to Nigeria at the conclusion of his engagements. The Federal Government has awarded contracts for the rehabilitation of 13 police training institutions nationwide, a three week exercise aimed at putting the facilities in shape ahead of new training programmes by the Nigeria Police Force. The update was presented at the 160th meeting of the National Economic Council in Abuja, chaired by who charged the Council to sustain ongoing economic reforms until improvements translate into jobs, stronger purchasing power and better living conditions for Nigerians. NEC also endorsed the Revised National Social Protection Policy for 2026 to 2030, presented by Minister of Budget and Economic Planning Abubakar Bagudu, urging states to align their own social protection policies, laws and budgets with the revised national framework aimed at strengthening coordination, financing and accountability across the federation. Vice President Kashim Shettima has said the Federal Government is deliberately spreading infrastructure and economic opportunity beyond major cities to ease congestion, expand jobs and promote balanced development nationwide, speaking while inaugurating the Elele Umudioga Egbeda Ubimini Akpabu Ikiri Omoku Dual Carriageway in Rivers State on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The 33.5 kilometre road runs through Ikwerre, Emohua and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government areas, linking communities along a key agricultural, commercial and oil and gas corridor leading to Omoku, widely known as the state’s Gas City. Shettima said the project reflects the Renewed Hope Agenda’s push to extend security, welfare and economic opportunity beyond the centre, arguing that people migrate to cities when roads, markets, jobs and services fail to reach them. He described roads as among the most democratic tools of development, connecting farmers to markets, workers to jobs, students to schools and patients to healthcare.
