Passenger Accessibility: FAAN Acquires Two Modern Ambulifts for Lagos Airport Operations

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has taken formal delivery of two state of the art ambulifts designated for immediate deployment at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. The strategic acquisition forms part of ongoing, wide-ranging operational reforms aimed at modernizing ground handling infrastructure and significantly elevating overall passenger satisfaction standards. Designed specifically to cater to travelers with reduced mobility, the newly arrived ambulifts will provide safe, comfortable, and efficient transfer services between the terminal gates and aircraft cabins. This equipment eliminates physical barriers, ensuring that elderly passengers, injured travelers, and citizens living with physical disabilities navigate boarding and disembarkation with absolute ease. During an official ceremony held at the Lagos airport, the Director of Airport Operations, Capt. Abdullahi Mahmood, formally presented the equipment keys to representatives of NACHO Aviation Services. NACHO Aviation Services will assume full operational oversight, routine maintenance, and tactical deployment of the specialized mobile lifts across international and domestic flight apron zones. Capt. Mahmood noted that the introduction of the modern ambulifts reflects the commitment of the current airport administration to align Nigerian aviation hubs with global standards. He stressed that providing dignified and safe transfer services is a fundamental passenger right that airport management is determined to protect across all commercial aviation terminals. The operational deployment of these units addresses long-standing challenges previously encountered by ground handling crews when assisting passengers requiring specialized mobility support. The specialized lifts feature temperature-controlled cabins, hydraulic elevation systems, and advanced safety secures capable of accommodating multiple wheelchairs and stretchers simultaneously during peak flight schedules. Industry observers and passenger rights advocates have warmly welcomed the initiative, highlighting it as a major step forward for inclusive air travel in West Africa. By investing in modern accessibility technology, the aviation authority is actively removing operational bottlenecks and improving total turn-around efficiency for commercial airlines operating out of Lagos. The airport authority reaffirmed its broader administrative agenda aimed at continuous infrastructure modernization, staff capacity building, and total service excellence across all federally managed airports. Officials noted that similar accessibility enhancements are currently being planned for other international gateways including Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Enugu. FAAN reiterated its determination to monitor the daily performance of ground handling service providers to ensure the equipment is deployed effectively. Passengers requiring special mobility assistance are encouraged to notify their respective airlines during ticket booking to enjoy smooth coordination upon arrival at the airport terminal. This latest asset delivery underscores a functional shift toward human-centered airport management in Nigeria, proving that modern infrastructure must cater seamlessly to every member of the traveling public without exception, bias, or operational delay.
