The Federal Government has awarded contracts for the rehabilitation of 13 police training institutions nationwide, a three week exercise aimed at putting the facilities in shape ahead of new training programmes by the Nigeria Police Force. The update was presented at the 160th meeting of the National Economic Council in Abuja, chaired by who charged the Council to sustain ongoing economic reforms until improvements translate into jobs, stronger purchasing power and better living conditions for Nigerians. NEC also endorsed the Revised National Social Protection Policy for 2026 to 2030, presented by Minister of Budget and Economic Planning Abubakar Bagudu, urging states to align their own social protection policies, laws and budgets with the revised national framework aimed at strengthening coordination, financing and accountability across the federation. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, to oversee a comprehensive forensic audit of Federal Government systems, including the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System and the administration and internal controls of federal agencies. The directive follows a Federal Executive Council resolution on August 19, 2026, responding to findings by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission on fake agencies, ghost workers and other control failures across government. The audit will run in two parts, the first examining IPPIS and related payroll, personnel, pension and financial management platforms to trace how fictitious or ineligible persons were enrolled and review access, identity, biometric and bank account controls, while checking interfaces with GIFMIS, Remita and the Treasury Single Account to determine whether fraud stemmed from system defects or deliberate circumvention. The second component will cover all federal agencies, departments, commissions and parastatals, establishing a definitive inventory of such bodies and verifying their legal basis, alongside how they obtain official recognition, budgetary consideration and access to government systems. Tinubu directed that the exercise be conducted with the highest standards of independence and forensic integrity, with the audit team collaborating with the ICPC to complement ongoing investigations and prosecutions, aiming ultimately to close systemic loopholes and strengthen accountability across government. The Federal Government has activated an emergency task force to contain a diphtheria outbreak among children in parts of Katsina and Kano States, deploying immediate measures to strengthen surveillance, close immunisation gaps and ensure timely access to treatment. Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Ali Pate, issued the directive, with the Federal Ministry of Health working alongside the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, affected state governments and international health partners to form a multi agency response team. The task force, co-chaired by the NCDC Director General and the Director of Public Health, includes representatives from Katsina, Kano, Zamfara and Sokoto States, the World Health Organisation and UNICEF, and has been directed to act on three fronts, outbreak investigation and immunisation, expanded treatment access, and emergency support for referral care. As part of the immediate response, NPHCDA has deployed 500,000 vaccine doses to Katsina and Kano States to support intensified immunisation in affected and at risk communities, while the Katsina State Government works with the task force to establish treatment annexes across the state’s three senatorial districts, Katsina, Daura and Funtua. The Federal Teaching Hospital, Katsina, the principal referral centre for the state and neighbouring areas, will receive urgent support including Diphtheria Antitoxin, intravenous antibiotics, additional clinical personnel and protective equipment, with the task force set to provide weekly progress updates to the Coordinating Minister. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has resolved its operational dispute with ride hailing service Bolt, clearing the company to resume operations immediately at FAAN managed airports following weeks of disruption for travellers. In a statement dated August 27, 2026, FAAN said the standoff stemmed from nearly a decade of efforts to address challenges around commercial and e hailing vehicles at airports, including passenger solicitation, unregulated pickups and accountability concerns, which led to the introduction of the Airport Car Hire Rank Management System, a queue management tool the Authority insists was never designed to compete with Uber, Bolt or any other mobility platform. The Authority clarified that fares highlighted in recent public discussions were not new rates imposed by FAAN or ACHRAMS, but existing airport taxi fares that the system simply made more visible, a transparency measure that inadvertently drew unfavourable comparison with the lower fares passengers had grown used to on e hailing platforms. FAAN acknowledged the significant impact the temporary interruption had on passengers and issued a direct apology for the difficulties caused, while stressing that its actions were driven by regulatory, safety and security considerations rather than economic interest. Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, said the resolution proves that airport security and integrity can be protected while preserving the convenience e hailing services offer passengers, adding that FAAN remains engaged with other e hailing operators and expects outstanding discussions to conclude soon. The Authority reaffirmed that passengers remain free to choose whichever authorised transportation option best suits their needs, with FAAN’s responsibility limited to ensuring that whichever service they choose operates within a safe, secure and accountable airport environment. The Nigeria Immigration Service has arrested 55 undocumented foreign nationals from Cameroon and Congo during an operation covering parts of Osun State, targeting suspected illegal immigrants who entered the country through unauthorised routes. NIS Comptroller of Osun State Command, Akinyemi Morakinyo, said the arrests followed intelligence gathered by the command, which used the information to trace the migrants’ residence in the Owode Ede community before bringing them to command headquarters under directives from the Comptroller General’s office. Speaking after parading the migrants, Morakinyo said the operation covered several locations across the state and that officers remain on the lookout for others who might still be hiding. One of the migrants, Ismail Mohammed from Cameroon, told journalists he arrived in Osun State in February 2026 after being invited by a woman based in Chad to run an online business in the state.
