The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, 25th August 2026 a public holiday in honour of this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, Peace Be Upon Him. Announcing the holiday on behalf of the government, Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji Ojo extended felicitations to Muslims across Nigeria and the diaspora, describing the occasion as a moment to reflect on a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others. He encouraged all Nigerians, not only the Muslim community, to draw lessons from those qualities, adding that the period should also serve as a time for collective prayer for the peace and cohesion of the country. Tunji Ojo urged citizens to mark the celebration with restraint and mutual respect, wishing Muslims a joyous and peaceful Eid while reaffirming government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property nationwide. NIS Comptroller of Osun State Command, Akinyemi Morakinyo, said the arrests followed intelligence gathered by the command, which used the information to trace the migrants’ residence in the Owode Ede community before bringing them to command headquarters under directives from the Comptroller General’s office. Speaking after parading the migrants, Morakinyo said the operation covered several locations across the state and that officers remain on the lookout for others who might still be hiding. One of the migrants, Ismail Mohammed from Cameroon, told journalists he arrived in Osun State in February 2026 after being invited by a woman based in Chad to run an online business in the state. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Mustapha said his exit from the ruling party does not mean he has abandoned Tinubu’s reelection cause, describing the rainbow coalition established by FCT Minister Wike in Rivers State as having extended its reach into Kwara. He said Saraki, who is not contesting for any office this cycle, is similarly supporting the coalition working to strengthen Tinubu’s chances, aligning himself with the FCT Minister’s stated position despite being in a different party. Mustapha linked his defection to a group called The Otoge Progressives, which he said emerged from a coalition of governorship aspirants who lost the APC primary and later felt alienated by how Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq is running the party in Kwara, naming Yahaya Seriki, Ibrahim Oloriegbe, Dele Belgore and others as members. The air component of Operation Hadin Kai has reportedly eliminated about 38 suspected terrorists in a series of precision air strikes against terrorist concentrations in Borno State, carried out between the night of August 21 and the early hours of August 22. According to counter insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, an armed reconnaissance platform picked up intelligence on terrorist vehicles and fighters near Aduwa around 10.23pm on August 21, tracking a group of about eight fighters gathered in one location alongside several other clusters nearby before striking the larger concentration, an operation assessed to have neutralised approximately 16 terrorists. Around midnight, the same platform tracked roughly 10 terrorists who had fled the initial strike and regrouped near a tree, striking the group in a follow up engagement that reportedly neutralised all 10, bringing the combined toll from the Aduwa operations to about 26. In a separate strike, another precision platform tracked around 12 fighters gathered in a hut near the Buratai area, maintaining surveillance before receiving authorisation to engage. The strike, carried out at about 12.31am on August 22, was assessed to have neutralised all 12 suspected terrorists at the location. The combined operations form part of intensified efforts by the military to dismantle terrorist formations and disrupt their freedom of movement across Nigeria’s North East. For generations, residents have lived and worked around the creeks of Ugbo Kingdom, but fear is now growing over what they describe as incursions by armed persons from a neighbouring Itsekiri community into land they consider their ancestral territory. The disputed area, known as Odun Ebiwonjumi, sits close to the Atlantic Ocean and offshore oil activities, a proximity residents believe is fuelling growing interest in the land from outside parties. Community leaders are calling for urgent dialogue between the Ondo and Delta State governments, alongside elders from both ethnic groups, to resolve the matter peacefully before it escalates. For the Ilaje residents, the stakes go beyond property lines, touching on their livelihoods, their ancestral heritage and the long standing peace between the two communities.
